A New Curriculum

What new strategies and approaches will you use to help student develop into “successful learners?”

Group A Response

Need quality inservicing to utlise the learning that 1:1 can provide - time will be an issue to allow new curriculum to emerge.

Is it a tool? will we be trapped into thinking idealistically that we can capture creativity with the new laptops. How will we develop the creativity and maturity - the independent learning modes that will required students to operate in a framework of trust.

Porn is a great example of the issues that might emerge - if we don't have a pedagogical shift.

How do we "educate' them - digital citizenship, information and critical literacy. what is the scope of our 'repackaging' of curriculum? How do we find the answers for ourselves? Think about the idea of internet 'restriction' - boys are already quite capable of bypassing the imposed 'security' measures.

Boys at school and out in the field - what do we do to develop the capacities of the students. Bottom line - they are still assessed in the 'standard' froms of written assessment. What do we do about that 'gap'? HSC is a factor in enforcing the 'industrial' model. Basic things to be concerned about = writing and spelling.

Creative learning versus teaching for the test. League tables etc.

How do we move towards an environment where students can manage and create their own learning topics or responses?

Balance is needed - human interaction coupled with technology facilitated interaction.
Authentic learning - experiencing things first hand - decisions that you have to make - critical judgement. Will I be safe? online or in outdoor education!

New curriculum must be quality learning driven. Is this 24/7 learning? How much interaction and when with the teachers?

The biggest thing remains as being the BALANCE.

Develop strategies to manage the time and obsession with social networking such as FaceBook. Social interactions in real life are 'tainted' by their online interactions. How do we facilitate better outcomes for the boys.

'New curriculum' will require a huge amount of devolopment in order to make the shift to digitally facilitated learning.

There is a skill in working alone!! and there is a skill in collaborating!!

How do with introduce the "question the content of ribena" thinking into the tasks and learning that boys are engaged with? What do we need to do/adjust with our information literacy models?

If we take on board the changes that happen when students learn with 1:1 computers — and we hope to achieve the lofty goals for successful learners — the basic tasks of the teacher must change. “Deep and logical thinking” require authentic challenges.

Boys may know more about the tools
Noise?
National curriculum ?

The TIME to produce new models/programs/assessments/webtools - will there be release time?????

Future Challenges
'Open' extension tasks -research beyond the text book.

1:1 has the potential to liberate students from facility constraints to allow further creative work within boader frameworks and increases scope for outputs.

Develop cross-curricula approaches to learning

Place trust in learners.

Creativity runs across the entire curriculum.

Exploration; seeking depth in understanding

Change our role from the teacher at the front to being more a facilitator of independant learning.

Designing appropriate tasks that allow development and assessment of quality tasks

Challenge in catering for the breadth of motivation/ability across class groups (more accelerated learning groups)

Commitment from departments to go beyond merely integrating ICT into some tasks, toward enriched learning suported by ICT tools.

Ensuring staff receive ongoing professional development in relation to ICT and Web 2+ tools

Need for Learning Management System (LMS) or Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) that is continually developed to maintaining an enriching motivating setting.

Ability to connect and engage across the school and with the broader community.

Teachers to maintain the role of guiding and modelling appropriate choices/behaviours; maintaining our 'presence'.
